INTRODUCTION
“Too Many Losing Heroines!” (Japanese: 負けヒロインが多すぎる！, Hepburn: Make Hiroin ga Ōsugiru!), also known as Makeine (マケイン), is a popular Japanese light novel series penned by author Takibi Amamori, with illustrations by Imigimuru. The story is set in the town of Toyohashi, located in Aichi Prefecture, where Amamori himselfs hails from. It follows a boy in high school who finds himself entangled with several girls, all of whom have recently suffered heartbreak after being rejected by the people they were in love with. Through their interactions, the series explores themes of unrequited love, personal growth, and emotional healing.
The novel first debuted under the Gagaga Bunko imprint, a division of the Japanese publishing giant Shogakukan, in July 2021. Due to its popularity, the story was later adapted into a manga, which began serialization in April 2022. The Manga is illustrated by the talented artist Itachi and can be read on Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday website and MangaOne app.
The series’ success didn’t stop there. In 2024, it received an anime adaption produced by the renowned studio A-1 Pictures, which aired on television from July to September. This anime brought the characters and their emotional journeys to life, further expanding the story’s fanbase and solidifying its place as a beloved title in contemporary Japanese pop culture.
THE STORY
Kazuhiko Nukumizu, who sees himself as nothing more than a “background character” in the larger story of life, unexpectedly finds himself in the middle of some serious drama. One day, by pure chance, he witnesses Anna Yanami, one of the most popular girls in his class, getting rejected by her childhood friend – a moment that could have stayed private if he hadn’t been there to see it. In his mind, he quickly labels her a “losing heroine,” a term he uses for girls who face romantic disappointments.
What starts as a casual observation soon pulls Kazuhiko into Anna’s life, and before he knows it, he’s getting involved with her and several other girls who share similar stories of heartbreak. These encounters start to challenge his passive, “background” role as he begins to form unexpected connection with these so-called “losing heroines.” Through these relationships, Kazuhiko’s world, once limited to the sidelines, starts to expand in ways he never anticipated.
THE MAIN CHARACTERS
- Kazuhiko Nukumizu
The protagonist of the story, a reserved and analytical high school freshman. He’s an otaku who enjoys reading light novels and prefers to keep to himself. Despite his introverted nature, he gives thoughtful advice to others and ends up supporting the “losing heroines” as they deal with rejection, though their antics often test his patience.
- Anna Yanami
A popular and cheerful girl in Kazuhiko’s class, known for her charm and friendly demeanor. Despite her bright exterior, she struggles with unrequited love for her childhood friend Sōsuke, who is now dating her rival. Anna’s love of food doesn’t affect her slim figure, adding to her frustration with her love life.
- Lemon Yakishio
Another “losing heroine” and a talented track and field athlete. Lemon has unrequited feelings for her childhood friend Mitsuki, who has a girlfriend. She later learns that Mitsuki has feelings for her in the past, which helps her come to terms with her heartbreak while remaining close friends with him and his girlfriend.
- Chika Komari
A shy and quiet member of the literature club. Chika struggles to communicate her feelings. She harbors a long-time crush in Shintarō, who remains unaware of her feelings. Though her crush remains unfulfilled, Chika manages to maintain a friendly relationship with both Shintarō and Koto.
- Koto Tsukinoki
The vice president of the literature club and Shintarō’s childhood friend. Koto has recently started dating Shintarō, who has been in love with her for a while. She plays a central role in the club’s dynamics and in Shintaro’s life, serving as both his close companion and now his girlfriend.
- Shintarō Tamaki
The president of the literature club and the object of Chika’s unrequited affection. While Chika harbors feelings for him, Shintarō is oblivious to them and is romantically interested in Koto, his childhood friend, with whom he has recently started a relationship.
ANIME ADAPTION
In December 2023, fans of the series got some exciting news – a TV anime adaption was officially announced. The show was produced by Aniplex, animated by A-1 Pictures, and directed by Shōtarō Kitamura. Masahiro Yokotani took care of the scriptwriting, Tetsuya Kawakami designed the characters, and Kana Utatane composed the music. The anime ran from July 14 to September 19, 2024, airing on Tokyo MX and other networks.
The opening theme song, “Tsuyogaru Girl” (which means “Tough-Acting Girl”), was performed by BotchiBoromaru featuring Mossa of Necry Talkie. Each of the “losing heroines” have their own ending theme songs: Hikaru Tono, voicing Anna Yanami; Shion Wakayama, voicing Lemon Yakishio; and Momoka Terasawa, voicing Chika Komari.
The idea for the anime had been in the works long before the light novel’s first volume even hit the shelves, according to the editor-in-charge, Iwaasa. This foresight helped pave the way for the show’s smooth transition to the screen.
