If you are into classic 90s anime series, then you are in for a treat. Today’s Let’s Talk Anime is about another classic that we all know and love. Since it has been around for many years now, some may have watched a couple of episodes. Let’s have a dive around One Piece.
Just like any anime series, One Piece started as a Shonen Manga, running from 1997 up to the present. It is an adventure-fantasy anime, with themes of pirates, fictional creatures, and superficial abilities. Later on, the anime first aired in 1999 and is still continuously airing to the present day. Since its premiere in Japan, over 1000 episodes have aired, and has been exported to various countries around the world. Produced by Toei Animation, One piece airs in Japan through its original network Fuji TV, as well as internationally through channels like Vizmedia, Funimation, Crunchyroll, and Australia’s Madman Entertainment.
Aside from thousands of manga and anime TV content, the franchise also has released 14 films and 7 OVAs and 4 shorts, even an already-announced live action series coming soon. Making it one of the longest running anime franchises. One Piece author, Eiichiro Oda was said to be inspired by Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump at a young age. As a child he was inspired by the animated series Vicky the Viking and wanted to draw a pirate manga series.
It is the story of the Strawhat Pirates, led by captain Monkey D. Luffy, on their adventures in Grand Line. The main theme is Monkey D. Luffy’s dream to find the One Piece, a grand treasure that the King of the Pirates, Gold Roger left behind. One Piece seems to take place in a world with one continent, many different islands, and a vast and large sea filled with monsters, pirates, and treasure.
According to fandom wiki, The original plan Oda set out for One Piece was for it to last for five years (meaning it originally would have ended in 2002). Also, have you ever wondered about its title? It was also said there that the title “One Piece” has a secret meaning that only Oda knows. Each week, Oda works on the story for three days then on the drawings for three more days. And lastly, the Japan Anniversary Association has officially recognized July 22 as “One Piece Day”. So if you’re an avid One Piece fan, you may or may not know of this date, but you do now, and you should celebrate.
Aside from the anime itself, the show is known for iconic fictional items that we bring back to life such as the plushies for these fictional creatures. In which is fun to dress up given their adorable and cute designs. Aside from that, the love over One Piece is never ending as different merch items inspired by the show is kept being made such as hoodies, plush toys, stickers, watches, aprons, and more. Merch items are such a must-have for every huge fan but still worth checking out if you have the likings for the show’s aesthetic and even casually interested with the show.
To add, One Piece has received praise for its storytelling, art, characterization, and humor. It has received many awards and is ranked by critics, reviewers, and readers as one of the best manga of all time. Several volumes of the manga have broken publishing records, including the highest initial print run of any book in Japan. In 2015, One Piece set the Guinness World Record for “the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author”
According to Wikipedia, the show received receptions, and is very well received. In a review of the first Funimation DVD release for Mania Entertainment, Bryce Coulter comments that One Piece is “not your typical pirate adventure” and that mixed with “the right amount of random fun along with a shonen style storyline” it becomes “an appealing and fun romp”. In a review of Funimation’s second DVD release for Mania Entertainment, Bryce Coulter comments that “You can tell that they are giving One Piece the attention that was neglected by 4Kids” and that “One Piece is a great tale of high-seas fun that will leave you wanting more!”
Expectingly, the show gathered several awards and nominations throughout the course of its airing. The first opening of the One Piece anime television series, “We Are!”, won the Animation Kobe Theme Song Award of the year 2000. In February 2001, One Piece placed 9th among anime television series in Japan. In 2001, the readers of Animage, a popular Japanese anime magazine, voted the anime television series in 5th place of The Readers’ Picks for the Anime that should be remembered in the 21st Century. In June 2002, Animage readers voted One Piece to be the 16th best new anime of the year 2001, and gave it another 16th place in 2004 in the category Favorite Anime Series. In a 2005 web poll by Japanese television network TV Asahi One Piece was voted 6th most popular animated TV series. Before the poll, Asahi TV broadcast another list based on a nationwide survey in which One Piece placed 4th among teenagers. In 2006, it was elected 32nd of the Top 100 Japanese anime by TV Asahi and 21st by its viewers. Funimation’s first DVD release of the series “One Piece: Season 1 First Voyage” was nominated for the Fifth Annual TV DVD Awards.
