Let's Talk Anime: Wistoria Wand and Sword

INTRODUCTION

“Wistoria: Wand and Sword” IS A Japanese manga series that weaves together magic, friendship, and adventure. Writton by Fujino Ōmoriand beautifully illustrated by Toshi Aoi, this enchanting tale began its serialization in Kondansha’s shonen mange magazine, Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, in December 2020.

Aerial invaders tore through the earth hundreds of years ago, nearly destroying everything. After banding together to repel the invaders, five mages known as the first “Magia Vander” created a strong barrier atop a massive tower called the “Mercedes Caulis” to keep the invaders at bay. Training magicians—including those powerful enough to become Magia Vander themselves and carry on the family tradition of preserving the barrier that guards the kingdom—is the principal goal of the Regarden Magical Academy.

In order to rejoin his childhood friend Elfaria Albis Serfort, the youngest magician to become a Magia Vander, Will Serfort, a student from Regarden, vowed to become a strong enough magician to be admitted into the Mercedes Caulis. Though few people are aware of Will’s true abilities, he is a skilled swordsman who can defeat formidable monsters that even the most formidable magicians cannot defeat. Despite his lack of magic aptitude, Will has managed to advance in his studies thus far thanks to his perfect written test scores and the extra credits he earned from hunting monsters in the school’s dungeon. Will continues pursuing his dream, making both allies and adversaries along the way as he demonstrates his actual abilities, which rock the earth to its core.

THE PROTAGONIST: WILL SERFORT

Our Journey begins with Will Serfort, a determined young man who dreams of fulfilling a promise made to his childhood friend, Elfaria Serfort. His goal? To ascend the ranks and become a Magia Vander-one of the mighty magicians who sit atop the Wizard’s Tower. Will’s unwavering determination and innate magical abilities set the stage for an epic adventure.

OTHER CHARACTERS

  • Elfaria Albis Serfort, is one of the Magia Vende and Will Serfort’s childhood friend/love interest. Since she knew him from childhood, Elfaria is one of the few people that doesn’t look down on Will, telling him that he was kind and was braver than others. When it comes to herself, Elfaria is also extremely childish, and lazy, even being called “The Embodiment of Laziness” within the Tower, as she holds no real interest in affairs in the Tower, and spends nearly all her time, either sleeping or watching Will’s actions from above the Tower.
  • Colette loire, is Will Serfort’s friend and a student at Ligarden Magic Academy. Colette is kind and friendly toward Will even though he can’t use magic, disliking it when people make fun of him such as standing up to Zion and his pals when they made fun of him. She is shown to have feelings for Will and considers Rosti to be dangerous and a rival.
  • Julius Reinberg, was one of the top 3 students at Ligarden Magic Academy. Julius is narcissistic and prideful as expected of a typical noble. He holds an immense dislike for Will Serfort, looking down on him for being unable to use magic, and tends to get angry when he’s in the nearby vicinity. Nevertheless, Julius is still able to work with him when he has to, as he acted professionally during the comprehensive training.
  • Rosti Naumann, is a student at Ligarden Magic Academy  and is Will Serfort’s roommate. Unlike others, Rosti didn’t look down on Will before his win over Julius  during the Great Magic Festival. He has immense feelings for Will to the point where Colette  considers him to be dangerous, going as far as to completely block his attempts at getting close to Will when the three of them went shopping.
  • Zeo Torzeus Rainbolt,  is one of the Magia Vende. Zeo is more accepting of everyone, stating that he’d use anyone even if they were Dwarves or had no magic as long as they were useful. He believes that those who are useful would claw their way up on their own.
  • Iris,  is a watcher for the Magia Vende. Iris doesn’t look down on people who can’t use magic, stating that she’d respect people regardless of whether they could use magic as long as they were useful. While in disguise, she acted as a junior, however she actually has a serious personality.

In the realm of “Wistoria”, magic pulses through every stone, tree, and creature. The land is divided into regions, each governed by a Magia Vander. These powerful sorcerers wield wands and swords, channeling their magic to maintain balance and protect their people.

The heart of this magical world stands the Wizard’s Tower-an imposing structure that pierces the sky. It houses the most skilled Magia Vanders, each with their unique abilities. As Will embarks on his journey, he faces trials, rivalries, and secrets hidden within the tower’s walls.
