Let’s Talk Book Week: Fun Ideas for Kids and Parents

IT IS AUGUST! BOOK WEEK IS HERE

That means it is time to prepare for Book Week and the upcoming Book Parades and Events that celebrates literature and encourages children to enjoy reading. Whether you are a parent, an adult who’s looking back at their book week days, or someone who just had the school event earlier, I think we can all relate how hectic yet fun it is to dress up our favourite book and comic characters. Today, We will be talking more about Book week as well as our suggestions to make it a fun experience for your kids and for the entire family as well.

Book week is a celebration, mostly held in schools, focusing on books and literature. The premise is to encourage children to read as well as exhibit the good benefits of reading such as garnering new knowledge, developing creativity and imagination, as well as being a great pastime activity among families and friends.

BOOK WEEK IN AUSTRALIA

Here in Australia, book week is celebrated around August. According to the Children’s Book Council of Australia, “During this time schools and public libraries spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children’s authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians create colourful displays, develop activities, run competitions and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. You will often see parades with students dressed as their favourite book character.”

Schools conduct different activities to promote the celebration that’ll surely get the students engaged. The best way to celebrate Book Week is to read a good book with your family and friends, participate in contests/activities, and heaps more.

One of the most prominent activities is the Book Parade. The Book Parade is an activity where the kids dress up as book characters. These colorful book week celebrations appeal to young people, especially the fantasy and magical fiction lovers, as they dress up as their favourite fictional characters and see their peers in such colorful outfits as well. Book week parade is seen to be an interactive way to encourage children to read and boost their creativity and imagination, one way being able to dress up as their favorite character and learning about these characters in the process

It is also a fun family activity as parents help dressing up their kids. Some families work together to make a DIY cosplay costume. On the other hand, busier parents buy the kids costumes that they’ll like. Family members gets as involved as it sparks a conversation on what kind of books and interests their child is into. A fun way for the family is join the kids in their school event if possible.

Aside from representing their favourite characters, kids also get recommendations from their fellows. A child can roam around, see someone in a costume their interested in, asks them which book and whose character is it, then there’s a recommendation that they’ll most likely to check out later on.

One of the Popular Characters kids dress up is Harry Potter. Those wizard capes, vest, ties, and scarves from the four Houses. Kids dress up as the Hogwarts wizard students inspired by the book. Cosplaying Anime characters are also in-demand as it is based on Manga Comics which is also a great medium for young people to read. Aside from those, fantasy creatures such as pirates, warriors, fairies, princesses, and more book-inspired characters are extremely popular.

PREPARE FOR BOOK WEEK PARADE

Firstly, before you choose on your kid’s costume, have the time coordinate with the school first. Be in the know with the schedule of activities, competitions, and the school’s plan for the week. That way, you can talk to your child at home and know what activities and competitions your child might be interested in. That’s also your opportunity to ask for guidelines on what is allowed and what is not allowed in the upcoming events.

Then, prepare the Parade costume, You can DIY costumes, or buy in stores if you don’t have the time or enough skills/resources for doing your child’s costumes yourselves! Encourage your child to participate the school events and join competitions for the week. Be involved on what your child is doing at school. You can as well join them if possible.
