Let’s Talk Comic Con

After a long while, convention season is upon us. Comic cons are starting to come back this year after any circumstances from the past years or so. With that said, the resurgences of anime conventions are much anticipated. Most of us are excited that we can now start to go to conventions, represent our favourite anime, and find like-minded people. Tons of conventions here in Australia to attend such as Central Coast Comic Con, Supanova, Smash, Oz Comic Con, Madfest, and more.
And as avid convention goers ourselves, we think it’s just right to write a little post about it.
COMIC-CON, ANIME AND MANGA CONVENTION
An anime convention is a large, sometimes annual, gathering of fans who congregate to enjoy anime, manga, video games, comics, and similar entertainment, usually in an anime convention center or other large venue, where fans gather to either display their interest in anime, buy and sell anime merchandise, or to meet voice actors. In the past, anime conventions have been associated with anime fandom, the Japanese pop culture phenomenon centered on Japanese animation (or “anime”) and other Japanese popular cultural exports.
The first anime convention was held in New York City in 1969, and they have since been held in many other cities around the world. There are several different types of conventions, with some focusing on anime, while others focus on gaming.
TIPS
The first tip is to come in groups. You can also find other people online who share your interest in comic con. For example, if you are a fan of a certain comic book or a particular movie, you can look online and see other people who share your interests. Secondly, if you want to meet new people, make sure that you go to a bunch of activities. The games and activities can help to get to know people you wouldn’t have otherwise met. Finally, participate in the activities. It’s a great way to get closer to other people and learn about new activities that you might be interested in. It also gives you a chance to get out of your shell and show your true personality.
Also, bring extra money so you can buy things you want or need at the convention, just in case you want to purchase comic books, clothing, merchandise, or anything else that will be a big purchase. The events and panels you want to attend may be sold out so it’s best to get there early. You should also prepare ahead of time by doing research on the locations (getting a floor map helps), what panels are going to be happening (If you want to go to a panel talk with the cast of your favorite show, do some research on their social media profiles, and see what their schedule is like before you go.) and what you’ll want to buy. This will help you decide what you want to do each day of the convention.
WHAT TO WEAR
Comic-Con is a big event, so cosplay is important to stand out from the crowd. If you are going to cosplay, make sure that you have the correct cosplay materials, and the costume fits you. Other than that, fashion is up to you. Just make sure your outfit fits the event and don’t wear anything that is too revealing or quite breaking the event’s rules. Go crazy with your favourite character.
But if your note the cosplayer-type of convention goer, we would recommend wearing shirts, hoodies, something that represents your favourite anime. For instance, if you are a big fan of Attack on Titan then I would recommend wearing an Attack on Titan shirt. If you are a fan of Naruto then I would recommend wearing a Naruto shirt with something that represents the show. Or maybe an apparel that replicates design of the characters’ costume. For example, shows like Demon Slayer has character-pattern cape and kimonos that you can wear without cosplaying the whole thing. Just put on the cape/coat of your favourite character on top of your shirt and you’re good to go.
GETTING READY
Get ready by doing research on the convention, transportation and events that are happening during your trip. Check what kind of passes you will need in order to attend the events. If you’re coming from a long distance, book a hotel in advance and make sure you have transportation booked to get you there. Bring some stuff for the convention such as stickers and other merchandise. When you’re in transit, make sure you’re constantly checking your phone for updates.
Research the convention beforehand to find out what kinds of things you can expect there so you don’t get caught off guard. It’s always a good idea to bring a list of things that you need to purchase as well as a list of people you expect to see. Remember to bring ID and a copy of your ticket. Also, pull together a group of friends who will be attending and have a great time. That way you can stay in touch with them and make it easier to meet up with them.
PREPARING FOR YOUR FIRST CONVENTION
If you are a first-timer, you should spend a day observing what the people do. The first day is usually the most crowded day, so if you arrive early, you will have a chance to see what the day looks like. You can have someone experienced to join you because it can be overwhelming. This will help you feel more comfortable but be prepared to get uncomfortable. That is the best way to get used to the experience. No pressure in doing cosplays right away if you’re not yet ready for it (although cosplaying is fun, I recommend you to try it) Wear an anime shirt because people will recognize you, and you’ll blend in in no time. Have fun with it and have a great convention.
You are going to Comic Con for the first time, you will have a lot of questions about what to expect. Start by doing research about the event because you will have a lot of questions that will be answered there. There are multiple ways to get information about the event, such as talking to your friends who have been before and checking out the website. Make sure to also get in touch with all your friends that you want to come with you.

There are a lot of options when it comes to conventions. Find the one that works for you. Don’t stress about how you should prepare for your first convention. Just do what works best for you, and you’ll be perfect!
