Kpop, who wouldn’t like them? Maybe some will not find kpop as their cup of tea but we just cannot ignore that Kpop culture is everywhere and is dominating the world. Most of us have probably encountered a Kpop song playing on the radio and on different establishments. It’s everywhere that even the non-fans will be familiar to a Kpop group or two.
Kpop, a more convenient term for Korean pop, is a genre of popular music originated in South Korea. They are known for their poppy, upbeat, catchy tune and distinct production styles that differentiates them from western pop music. Since these types of songs have lyrics that can be understood by Koreans and people that had good knowledge of the language, Kpop music of gives out the treatment of a dance party anthem and a mood booster for casual non-korean listeners.
Then, there goes the kpop idols. They are what makes Kpop alive in South Korea and even to the World. Comes in solo or in a group, they are the face, the voice, and the visual image of Kpop music. With trendy, poppy, colorful, sometimes edgy, and cyberpunk-esque style, these kpop idols are meant to look very attractive and aesthetically appealing to the audience. Also, given the dance party environment of Kpop, idols are also meant to be good dancers and have poppy and cute singing voices. Some of them are also good rappers, and most of them are absolute performers. Korean entertainment companies such as YG, JYP, SM entertainment, Bighit, and more trains young artists for years to master their dancing and singing skills, sets important rules, and makes huge creative and marketing decisions for their idols’ projects.
We just cannot deny how the Kpop culture is having a huge impact in the entertainment sphere, hence goes a cult-like following of dedicated fans called as stans. An acronym for Bangtan Sonyeondan, also known as the Bangtan Boys, a seven-member boy group consists of members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. Known for their music such as Dynamite, Butter, etc. and has collaborated with western artists such as Halsey and Megan Thee Stallion.
BLACKPINK
Comes second to the list, but literally getting to the same level of global popularity as BTS. Blackpink, a girl group consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group debuted in August 2016 with their single album Square One, which featured “Whistle” and “Boombayah”. Known for their songs “How you like that”, “Kill this Love”, “Lovesick Girls” and their most recent album “The Album”
TWICE
Here’ another girl group that is starting to enter the global mainstream music scene and entering the charts. You probably have heard of Twice which is a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment. The group is composed of nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. Known for their songs “I can’t stop me”, “Alcohol-free”, “More and More”, and “The Feels”.
ENHYPEN
Quite new Kpop boy group but already have a massive following. Debuted in 2020, this South Korean Kpop boy group Enhypen formed by Belift Lab (or simply Belift). The group is composed of seven members: Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki. Known for songs “Fever”, “Not for Sale”, “Flicker”, and “Tamed-Dashed”. Debuted in 2020 Through an Idol survival show. With EP Border: Day One and album “Dimension: Dilemma”
STRAY KIDS
Stray Kids, also known as SKZ, is a popular South Korean boy group under JYP Entertainment. The group consists of 8 members: Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. known for songs “All in”, “Back Door”, and the “I am Not” EP. Debuted in 2017, They are starting to get widely popular around this year with a more global following.
SEVENTEEN
Seventeen or SVT, which is a popular South Korean boy band formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2015. The group consists of 13 members: S.Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, DK, Mingyu, The8, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino. With albums Love & Letter (2016), Teen, Age (2017) and An Ode (2019), and songs like “Getting closer”, “Clap”, “Pretty U”, and “Very Nice”.
ITZY
Another uprising Kpop girl group known for their cute candy vibes aesthetic. Itzy, which is a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment, consisting of members Yeji, Lia, Ryujin, Chaeryeong, and Yuna. Known for songs “Not Shy”, “Wannabe”, “Dalla Dalla” and “Icy”and album “Crazy in Love”. Debuted in 2019, and continuously entering the charts.
TXT
TXT, Tomorrow X Together (Tomorrow By Together), is a five-member South Korean boy band formed by Big Hit Music. The group consists of five members Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun and HueningKai. Known for songs “Crown”, “Can’t You See Me”, and “Drama”. Debuted in 2019 and now of recognizable Kpop groups.
ATEEZ
Ateez is a South Korean boy group formed by KQ Entertainment. The group consists of eight members: Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung, and Jongho.
