Anime, we all love them. Some of us are avid fans, and some are just casual watchers. Anime is everywhere, and it’s widely accepted globally. There are people may have watched, recognized, and are familiar with a few shows.
Anime have been a part of our childhood, and even adulthood. We even have made friends that has the same interests in anime nowadays. Sometimes, we were able to watch it with our family members and even tried to explain and get them along on what anime you are into. A few of us have the chance to cosplay them or even buy something that is inspired by that show.
During our childhood, we watch them on CDs, tapes, or sometimes in television and even do imaginary role play with our playmates with certain characters, abilities, and superpowers, and go to stores to buy stuff that resembles what is used on that show. Today, with the access of internet, we can access them through streaming services and some of them have games that we play, and shop for anime merchandise online.
In simplest definition, anime is a term called for Japanese animated shows. Mostly has the themes of action, heroism, adventures, superpowers, and extraordinary plots, especially revolving around the lives of young people. These anime shows have a very distinct style, and is widely liked because of their theme, style, storylines, and designs.
Today, let’s open the Anime nostalgia machine and look back at some classic anime that has been a huge part of our childhood, and still an important part of our lives until now.
In this post, you’ll feel old as we will focus on anime shows released in the 90s up to the early 2000s. For more recent, such as late 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s anime shows, we’ll get you a part 2.

NARUTO
We all know Naruto. Admit it, it is one of the popular and widely known anime Series, and even got series of movies. This is one of the anime that has such a wide fanbase. It is the story of a young kid Naruto Uzumaki and his adventures to become the Hokage of the town of Konoha. The story revolves around his journey, friendships, actions, trainings, and even his life as the handler of the nine-tailed fox.
POKEMON
Gotta catch them all! Pokemon is a very popular anime series, even made more known for their cute pocket monsters and series of game franchises. Known for pokemon trainers such as Ash Ketchum, Brock, Serena, and pokemons such as Pikachu, Charizard, Jigglypuff, and Squirtle. Aside from their anime, movies, and video games, they are also known for their trading cards.
ONE PIECE
One piece is also a popular anime someone may know. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” in order to become the next Pirate King.
FAIRY TAIL
Natsu Dragneel, a Dragon Slayer wizard from the Fairy Tail guild, explores the Kingdom of Fiore in search of his missing adoptive father, the dragon Igneel. During his journey, he befriends a young celestial wizard named Lucy Heartfilia and invites her to join Fairy Tail. Lucy forms a team with Natsu and his cat-like Exceed partner, Happy, which is joined by other guild members: Gray Fullbuster, an ice wizard; Erza Scarlet, a magical knight; and Wendy Marvell and Carla, another Dragon Slayer and Exceed duo.
SAILOR MOON
We all know Sailor Moon. It is absolutely one of the anime series that has iconic schoolgirl-like costumes. Usagi met a talking cat named Luna, who tells her that she is Sailor Moon, a superhero. She has to fight monsters to save people from getting their energy stolen by evil beings. Usagi has some friends who fight evil along with her. They are named Sailor Mercury, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter.
INUYASHA
This classic romantic fantasy anime is something you wouldn’t want to miss. It revolves around the adventure of an ancient half-demon Inuyasha and a modern day schoolgirl Kagome that one day discovered a well to travel in time, and later on realized that she’s the reincarnation of Inuyasha’s then lover Kikyo, and inherits a secret jewel.
DRAGON BALL Z
Dragon Ball Z continues the adventures of Son Goku, who, along with his companions, defends the Earth against villains ranging from aliens (Vegeta, Frieza), androids (Cell) and magical creatures (Majin Buu). While the original Dragon Ball anime followed Goku from childhood to early adulthood, Dragon Ball Z is a continuation of his adult life, but at the same time parallels the life of his son, Gohan, as well as the development of his rivals, Piccolo and Vegeta.
DEATH NOTE
Known for the remarkable Death Note notebook which is the main plot device on the show, The anime Death Note, known for being a supernatural, psychological mystery series has been adapted to live action, video games, TV, and film anime series. You can say that this is remarkably successful. In Tokyo, a disaffected high-school student named Light Yagami finds the “Death Note”, a mysterious black notebook that can kill anyone as long as the user knows both the target’s name and face.
CARDCAPTOR SAKURA
You may be familiar with Cardcaptor Sakura, as it’s one of a classic anime that is still being watched to this day because of its pretty design and distinct animation style. Ten-year-old Sakura Kinomoto accidentally releases a set of magical cards known as Clow Cards from a book in her basement created and named after the sorcerer Clow Reed. Each card has its own unique ability and can assume an alternate form when activated.
HUNTER X HUNTER
One of the most familiar anime is Hunter X Hunter, because of it’s remarkable and light-hearted approach, but still revolves around the story of being a hunter. The story follows a young boy named Gon Freecss, who was told all his life that both his parents were dead. But when he learns from Kite, an apprentice of his father Ging Freecss, that he is still alive and has since become an accomplished Hunter, Gon leaves his home on Whale Islandto take the Hunter Examination in order to become a Hunter like him.
