Proper Care for Your Cosplay Wigs

A few weeks ago, we have posted a little article on how to take care of your cosplay costumes, so as a follow-up part of that, we have written a little something on how to take proper care of your cosplay wigs, in hopes that you’ll find this helpful in taking care of yours as well.
As an anime fan, sometimes it is a joy to us to be able to dress up as our favorite character, and for cosplay fans, getting the wig of the character their dressing up with is a huge deal. Whether short, long, vibrant colored, and in any style, these wigs complete the look for every cosplay, that is why we offer a wide range of cosplay wigs in our shop, and today, we will share you little tips to maintain your wigs.
HERE ARE OUR TOP 4 TIPS ON PROPER CARE AND STYLING YOUR WIGS.
As most of these cosplay wigs are made of synthetic fiber, meaning that it the texture and quality might differ from what is expected, but they’re great and it needs a very careful way of maintaining.
KEEP YOUR WIGS CLEAN BY WASHING THEM PROPERLY AND SAFELY
These wigs require little to no washing to start with but given that we will be using them for special events and very rarely, hence it gets exposed to dust by keeping it stored by a long time. It is quite needed that we should wash them remove dirt and dust as well as maintain cleanliness, color vibrance, and comfort for our cosplay event.
Keep in mind to not use harsh detergent and use a wig shampoo. Regular shampoo isn’t recommended but small amount of milder shampoo can probably do. Just mix a tablespoon to a bowl of cool water and soak them in there for one minute until the mixture gets saturated with the wig. Also, do light brush/comb and detangling before washing and wait until it gets fully dry before styling. Never style a wet wig.
It’s generally recommended that synthetic wigs be washed after every 15-20 wearings. If you wash too frequently, you risk shortening the life of your wig. If you keep your own hair clean underneath the wig, you can reduce the frequency with which your wig needs washing which may further help to prolong the life of your wig. Be sure to take your wig in to be styled by a professional at regular intervals.
DETANGLE… DETANGLE
In some cases, a styled cosplay wig could get a bit messy and tangled due to factors such as packaging, the owner’s way of using them, and the long time of use, so we better consider maintaining its style regularly so that it can last longer and look better and nicer.
Start on detangling by using a wide tooth comb lightly to the wig. Always remember to start on combing the tangled part of the wig and the tips and try detangling them slowly until you reach the upper part of the wig, and you can repeat this process until you can smoothly comb them from the top to the tip. Do it by parts or segments.
For better results, you can repeat the detangling with a brush and gently use them until you get the results you need. Remember, do light, gentle strokes, and always support the segment with your hand so that it could avoid being forcedly pulled from the top part, in which will cause them to break.
STYLE THEM UP
A lot of factors can ruin the wigs’ style and structure. That’s why we need to maintain their style every once in a while. And maintaining synthetic wigs should be not that difficult. In fact, it does require minimal maintenance and not so complicated procedures, but just a few things to remember.
Always remember that these wigs aren’t heat friendly, so it is not the best idea to use heat press and iron curlers as it may burn and damage your wigs. As an alternative, you can use a generous amount of hairspray and wig styling glue to keep your wigs in shape. For some instances, you may need to put bobby pins to support them together as well.
STORE THEM IN A CLEAN, SECURE PLACE
It is necessary to store our costumes and wigs when not in use. But for your convenience, you may want to clean them and make sure they are in best condition before storing so that they’ll come handy and would require little-to-no preparations moving forward, also to avoid dirt for getting stuck up, resulting to smells, discolorations, and sticking up.
Dust is everywhere, especially if the place hasn’t been cleaned and maintained for quite some time in which may make everything a dirty mess. Same with wigs. Don’t store them somewhere that could expose them to dirt and dust, or always do regular cleaning to places that you put your cosplay costume on to avoid being dusted overtime. It is suitable to keep it sealed tight in a secured box, on a closet, most likely a part of your closet that doesn’t blend in your actual clothes, just somewhere that you can maintain easily and regularly.
You wouldn’t want dust to get into your wigs. The more it gets exposed to dust and dirt it may get stuck on them, especially if wasn’t taken care for a long time. So, make sure you are checking on it every once in a while to assure that it hasn’t damaged yet.
